San Diego Chinese Historical Museum
San Diego Chinese Historical Museum is a great place to learn about San Diego’s rich Chinese history and culture. The museum is located at 404 3rd Ave, San Diego, CA 92101. The museum was originally a Christian mission that was converted to accommodate Chinese immigrants but later converted to serve the community as a Chinese language school for American-born Chinese children. San Diego’s Chinese community first migrated to the United States in the early nineteenth century. In 1876, a Chinese mission was established in San Diego, and by 1890, the population of Chinese immigrants in San Diego had grown from 404 to 480. The mission was later changed to the California Chinese Mission and then to the Chinese and Japanese Mission, a reflection of the growing outreach to the Japanese. Today, the Museum has many exhibits about the early history of Chinese culture in San Diego. There is an exhibit about the “Underground Chinatown” that was created for the 1915 Panama-California Expo. It depicted the seedier side of Chinese culture and included a massive Chinese gate at the entrance and a fake Chinese village behind it. It also featured a slave girl, gambling, and opium use.In addition to the museum’s exhibits, the museum hosts an annual conference to explore the history of Chinese culture in San Diego.
