Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego – Downtown
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MOCA-SD) is an art museum located at 1100 Kettner Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101. It is part of the MASS MoCA art complex, which also includes the Center for the Arts, a building dedicated to dance and the Center for Creative Education. The museum focuses on contemporary visual arts from the 1960s onwards. The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego was founded in 1983 by Dr. Harry Ransom, Jr., a professor at Vanderbilt University and founding director of that university’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology & Ethnology . The first director was Ann Godoff; from 2011 until 2015 she was succeeded by Eduardo Vilar. MOCA-SD’s current exhibitions
The Saturday Market highlights a vibrant and creative community through stories and images that highlight the richness of the San Diego art scene. This market features over 100 artists and artisans, who create one-of-a-kind pieces and original art. Each Saturday from 11am-4pm, this free event is held at the historic San Diego Central Library. Guests may stroll the Market, where they will find a vibrant collection of local foods, handmade crafts, and artwork from over 100 local artists. The Market will also feature live music throughout the event. Wildlife: The Exhibition – December 6, 2018 – February 16, 2019 This exhibition brings together the work of contemporary wildlife artists who are inspired by the natural world. Visitors can experience the art and interact with the animals through interactive displays, artworks, and live animals in the exhibition. Visitors can view the exhibition in the museum’s main gallery, which features a transparent wall that allows the public to peer into a gallery where the animals are being held.

Popular art in San Diego’s public art collections
The San Diego Art Museum (SDAM) is the city’s major art museum. It was founded in 1939 and moved into a new building downtown in 2002. Its sister institutions are the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the San Diego Natural History Museum, both part of the University of California San Diego campus. SDAM features a wide variety of art and artifacts covering various periods, regions, and media. The museum’s collection includes works by contemporary artists such as Richard Diebenkorn, Richard Serra, and David Salle, as well as works by more traditional artists such as Diego Rivera and John Singer Sargent.
