Remediation After Water Damage and Dangerous Mold

What to Do about Water Damage and Dangerous Mold Growth in San Diego Homes

According to the EPA, there are more than 100,000 different types of mold that can emit
thousands of different spores and dangerous toxins into the air. These contaminants have
the ability to affect the health of anyone living in the environment. Inhaling or touching
mold can have some very serious health repercussions. It is crucial to have any mold that
is found in your home tested to determine the extent of the health hazard it is producing.

There are a variety of allergic symptoms that are associated with mold:

* Watery or red, burning eyes
* Sore throat or dry, hacking cough
* Shortness of breath
* Nose and throat irritation
* Nasal and sinus congestion
* Wheezing or other respiratory problems
* Skin irritation
* Aches and pains
* Central nervous system problems (including but not limited to mood swings, memory
issues, and headaches)

If you have some or all of these symptoms, it is not conclusive proof that you do have a
mold problem in your home, but is a good idea to have it checked out by a local water
damage or mold remediation specialist.

Mold grows best in environments where the humidity level is 60% or greater. The most
common areas of mold growth is found in the laundry room, kitchen, and in bathrooms.
Other areas in a home can grow mold if there are unseen water leaks, standing water
directly outside the wall, or liquid spills that are not cleaned properly.

Once the areas of potential mold growth have been identified in your home, there are
measures that can be taken to prevent growth in these areas. Increasing air circulation
and/or direct sunlight to these areas will limit mold growth. For areas such as closets,
cupboards and underneath sinks, where you might not be able to significantly increase
light or air flow for prolonged periods, aggressive cleaning with soap can prevent mold
from settling in.

If you have small amounts of mold and are concerned about allergic reactions, you
should wear rubber gloves, a mask, and maybe use a stronger cleaning solutions.
Be aware the stronger cleaning solutions, such as bleach and other over the counter
chemicals have the ability to injure people, so use bleach and strong cleaners with
caution.

Once an area has been cleaned to remove mold, it is necessary to remove the material

that was infested with mold. There can still be toxic residue remaining in the dead mold
spores.

If you find excessive mold in your home then there may be a significant problem inside
of the wall or in the sub-floors, so you should contact a professional San Diego water
damage and mold remediation company.
